Distance education is defined by (Simonson, Smaldino, Albright, & Zvacek, 2009) as institution based formal education where the learning group is separated, and where interactive telecommunications systems are used to connect learners, resources, and instructors. The evolution of distance learning has definitely taken another form over the last 10-15 years. With constant advances in technology and the increased need for flexibility among adult student learners, distance learning looks to be here for the long term.
I feel that the definition of distance learning will consistently change with the continued evolution of technology. With the creation of learning and social tools such as Skype and Yahoo Instant Messenger, distance learning now provides more of an interaction among student and instructors which will continue to provide an alternative for students who are not comfortable with having limited one on one interaction among their peers and professors.
Prior to beginning my EDUC-6135 Distance Learning course, I had a solid understanding of distance learning and the overall goal of most online education institutions. The fact that I currently work for an education group only increases the benefits of working as well as gaining my higher education in this format. Just a few years ago before working in the education field, I was not a fan of distance learning and the format that the context was delivered. I constantly thought that receiving an education in a distance format would not be beneficial because of the omission of the face to face aspect of education. I was also concerned that I would not have access to the necessary tools to assure I would be successful after completing my program. One of my biggest observations and concerns was gaining the creditable degree that would be accepted and recognized by businesses across the country.
Needless to say, my views have changed drastically after being enrolled in this program and more importantly this course. This week’s learning resources provided further insight on the history and background of distance learning. My definition of distance learning currently is an effective format of providing the highest technological quality course in an online environment. At this point in my life, the concept of a traditional based classroom environment is the furthest from possible. I have seen the benefits and flexibility of Walden University’s program and now prefer it over a brick and mortar school or university.
With the constant advancement of online learning institutions, in both technology and creative approaches, the future looks bright for distance learning. I envision that with the current state of the American economy more and more traditional based universities will become more open to the inclusion of online universities and distance learning practices within their universities. It has been very well documented of the success that recent graduates of online universities have contributed to their local communities. The fact that so many students have gone on to create positive social change through their work only assures that the distance learning format currently works and will continue to be improved with in time.
